How your skin can be sensitive to heat
Here comes the sun! Who doesn’t love the feel of those first rays of sunshine after (finally!) packing away our winter knits? You’re all ready to peel off the layers and feel the sunshine on your skin, but sometimes this doesn’t go as smoothly as planned. When summer sets in, so too does the heat, UV rays, and air conditioning. Whether you’re battling dry skin in summer or your skin is sensitive to heat, it’s sometimes difficult to make your skin feel as relaxed as you are on a summer holiday.
But it’s not all doom and gloom! With a few tips on how to deal with sensitive skin in the summer and protect it from potential irritants, you’ll be more than ready to take the heat.
Heat
Feeling hot and bothered? All skin is sensitive to heat in some ways, from getting oilier to coming out in irritating heat rashes. Hot weather increases water loss from the body, leading to dehydration. This can mean red, dry and prickly skin, so if you need another reason to keep your water levels topped up and your skin hydrated, this is it! Check out our tips here.
Summer heat tends to mean more sweat, more oil, and speedier skin cell production too. When dead skin cells mix with this excess oil and sweat, it’s hello spot breakout. Outsmart summer skin sensitivity and switch to a summer skincare routine at the start of the season.
Sun
Whatever your summer plans, don’t forget how important sun protection is for you and your skin! As well as more serious health risks, too much sun can damage your skin’s moisture barrier, leading to lost elasticity, dryness, prickly skin irritation and even premature ageing. It doesn’t have to feel hot for your skin to feel the sun’s damaging effects: rays can reach through glass, so don’t forget the SPF for your Glasto roadtrip! Spending summer by the sea? Lucky you!
Water can mean double-trouble for skin, bouncing UV rays onto your skin twice, so keep smothering on that SPF! Lastly, don’t save the SPF for hotter moments. Slot one into your everyday routine (and reapply regularly too!) to stay sun savvy.
Air conditioning
Air conditioning. An instant ahh for us. An irritated argh for our skin. If you’re experiencing dehydrated or dry skin in summer, there’s also a chance it’s more to do with the ‘weather’ inside your home than outside! To find out how to deal with sensitive skin reactions to air conditioning, read more here.
